Google Search app for Android update 1.3.3
Search is an integral part of Android, Google is search first and foremost after all. The search giant is now pushing an update for the Google Search app to Android 2.2, 2.3 and 3.x devices, which should bring some of the functionality, performance and looks adopted in the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich version.

Google is claiming that you will notice how faster and smoother this new version is. New features include a simplified user interface, search results are now grouped by type, there are country-specific search results, while you can now remove search history items.

Google Doodle - Merry Christmas

An interactive Google Doodle is up on the giant’s main search page celebrating Christmas. Clicking each button under a letter in the Google logo switches it with a symbol and when you’ve gone through all the buttons you’ll be greeted with a familiar tune and a typical gaudy light show. We’ve able to access the Doodle over at the UK search page google.co.uk, but we’re pretty sure it will go up in the US very soon too.

The Android team has also been pretty active and with the help of some free Galaxy Nexus’s being distributed to employees and tons of snow being sprayed at Google’s Mountain View, California headquarters, they really got into the holiday spirit and have created the video below. As you would expect, there is a lot of Ice Cream Sandwich plastered all over.

"porn" and "Christmas" search terms on Google Trends

There is a repeating pattern each year. According to Google Trends, apparently, a lot of people search for “porn” throughout the year. The pattern has been that for the past seven years “Christmas” eclipses “porn” for the short period every year when we actually celebrate it.

The interesting part is that the popularity of porn as a search term has been on a rising trend, whereas the popularity of Christmas as a search term has been going down. So, could the pattern be broken this year? According to our latest check of Google Trends on the two terms, Christmas is lagging way behind for now, though we are hopping for a quick comeback.

Leading the search for porn is Ireland followed by the United Kindgom and then Greece. Interestingly Greek speakers also lead the search for porn in general!

Google Search 'let it snow'

Google loves its virtual Easter eggs and the latest hidden piece of virtual fun has come from the Google Search page. Head over to google.com and search for ‘let it snow’ (without the quotation marks). The resulting page will be covered with snowflakes until it freezes over. Don’t despair, just hit defrost to get back to the results, but you might want to try your hand on some drawing first. Once the page has frozen over click with your mouse and draw.

Google Image Search for tablets

Google has just launched a new carousel view for tablets when using image search. Images take up the majority of the screen with an info box at the bottom and you can swipe left or right. The new tablet-optimized carousel view certainly looks like a great improvement to the user experience, and quite addictive for those who enjoy to flick through hundreds of images.

What we’ve spotted in the video, after the break, is Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich running on what appears to be a Motorola XOOM.
No tablet has yet been officially updated to run Ice Cream Sandwich and we are sure that a lot of XOOM owners will be pleading to get their hands on the update ASAP.

iPad Google Search app

Google has just updated its Search app for the iPad. The new version offers a complete redesign with much more visual appeal and new features. Interactions are designed to take advantage of the iPad’s large screen and touch interface.

As soon as you start typing in the input box, Google Instant starts to display relevant results so that you will be able to get better prediction of your intended search with fewer keystrokes.

You now have a choice between reviewing the search results as the classic list or switch to a visual slide presentation, navigable by swiping. When doing an image search you are now presented with a default image carousel, where you can swipe left or right between the images.

Google quick currency conversion

One of the very useful, and not too well known, functions of Google search is unit and currency conversion. We use it practically daily and it really makes our life simpler.

Essentially you can convert between currencies e.g. EUR to USD through a simple search. Just enter x-amount CURRENCY1 to CURRENCY2 in the search box and Google will hande the rest. Specifically in our example we entered 600 EUR to USD and quickly got our result.
