Samsung Galaxy S III teardown: optically laminated Super AMOLED display with Gorilla Glass 2

We love using our gadgets, you know when they are actually fully assembled and functioning, but we also have a bizarre affinity to watching them get torn down into dozens of separate parts giving us a glimpse of what’s inside.

The latest device to have received the teardown treatment is none other than the hero smartphone of the moment, the Samsung Galaxy S III. As usual the good folks over at iFixit did the slicing and dicing, which has revealed a number of tasty bites.

Samsung Galaxy S III in handNo surprises here, the Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone is official. The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich device will now happily take the throne as Samsung’s flagship smartphone and it has been donned with some amazing hardware and software features.

First-off it features a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display with a 720p resolution. This is unfortunately not an AMOLED Plus RGB screen but rather it features the same PenTile Matrix RGBG technology as the Galaxy Nexus. You’ll find a new 1.4GHz quad-core Samsung Exynos 4412 SoC inside that should keep things speedy and a relatively large 2,100mAh battery to power it, and yeah that’s actually a removable one. The Galaxy S III can also do wireless charging.

The Galaxy S III will be offered in three storage capacities, 16, 32GB and 64GB and the ability to add more via the microSD card slot. It has 8-megapixel rear and 1.9-megapixel front-facing cameras with the a 990ms start-up time (they could have just said 1 second), 3.3 frames-per-second burst shooting ability and will also happily pick the best shot out of eight for you.

Samsung May 3 2012 "next Galaxy" Unpacked London event invite

After a lot of speculation and plenty of possible date-throwing, Samsung has started sending out invitations for an Unpacked event on May 3rd in London. The invite just reads Come and meet the next Galaxy, so this could have possibly been any Galaxy smartphone or tablet. However, the Korean DDaily has confirmed with a Samsung official that this will be the next flagship Samsung Galaxy smartphone, a.k.a. the long-rumored Galaxy S III (though name still remains unconfirmed and Samsung could pull an Apple-type stunt and just call it Galaxy S).

Nothing more in terms of information. Though we can reiterated the standing rumors for the Galaxy S III, which include a large screened device with the first non-PenTile Super AMOLED Plus HD 720×1280 screen, a quad-core Samsung Exynos 4412 processor or the dual-core 2GHz Exynos 5250, just 7mm of thickness and some space-age material.
