Samsung sends invites for May 3rd event in London to unveil next Galaxy smartphone

Samsung May 3 2012 "next Galaxy" Unpacked London event invite

After a lot of speculation and plenty of possible date-throwing, Samsung has started sending out invitations for an Unpacked event on May 3rd in London. The invite just reads Come and meet the next Galaxy, so this could have possibly been any Galaxy smartphone or tablet. However, the Korean DDaily has confirmed with a Samsung official that this will be the next flagship Samsung Galaxy smartphone, a.k.a. the long-rumored Galaxy S III (though name still remains unconfirmed and Samsung could pull an Apple-type stunt and just call it Galaxy S).

Nothing more in terms of information. Though we can reiterated the standing rumors for the Galaxy S III, which include a large screened device with the first non-PenTile Super AMOLED Plus HD 720×1280 screen, a quad-core Samsung Exynos 4412 processor or the dual-core 2GHz Exynos 5250, just 7mm of thickness and some space-age material.

Samsung Galaxy S III to launch May and be 7mm thick say ‘industry sources’

The Samsung Galaxy S III (SGS3), rumored successor to the incredibly successful Galaxy S II, is a hotly anticipated device, so expect to be bombarded with rumors and supposed insider leaks until it becomes official. Samsung has stated that we will not be seeing the SGS3 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this month, but rather at a dedicated Samsung event in the first half of the year.

After Samsung threw the gauntlet to the rumor mill, we’ve heard of reports for a potential release of the SGS3 in March, April and July. Now you can add May to the mix as well, since a Korean publication citing industry sources claims that the SGS3 will be released in May.

Samsung Galaxy S III will come before June, no MWC announcement

Samsung Galaxy S III mock-up

Samsung has just released a statement confirming that the successor of the popular Galaxy S II Android smartphone will be unveiled at a dedicated event during the first half of 2012 and not at Mobile World Congress 2012 (MWC) in Bacerlona this month.

The Galaxy S II has been incredibly successful, having outsold every other Android smartphone out there. The device was announced at last year’s MWC in February 2011, but only shipped in June to European and Asian customers and in September in the US.

We would say that it only makes sense for Samsung not to cannibalize the sales of its existing line with the announcement of a successor this early in the year and before any potential shipping date. The Galaxy S III will also be big news, based on popularity of the SGS II, so we would think that Samsung doesn’t want any other manufacturer stealing its thunder. MWC will see the announcement of a cornucopia of new smartphones and tablets, including a rumored high-resolution 10-inch tablet from Samsung.

Samsung Exynos 5250 SoC

There is huge war raging behind the scenes on which chip will power the next generation of mobile devices. We have increasing demands from our smartphones and tablets and system-on-a-chip (SoC) manufacturers have to find ways of multiplying processing power, pushing more pixels on higher resolution screens while staying as power-frugal as possible. Samsung SoCs are a force to be reckoned with and last year’s Exynos 4210, found in the Samsung Galaxy S II, Samsung Galaxy Note and Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, literally crushed all other chips in benchmarks.

We heard of Samsung’s next generation Exynos 5250 SoC last November, and during its latest earnings call, Samsung said that it has already begun sampling to manufacturers and the 5250 will go into mass production in Q2 this year.
