Facebook Messenger for Windows

While slowly taking over the world, Facebook has also been busy in getting people to chat on all sorts of platforms. There are already official Facebook messaging apps for Android, iOS and BlackBerry and now a Windows 7 standalone application has leaked.

The Facebook Messenger app for Windows obviously has chat but also a ticker, standard notifications and friends requests. You can dock the Messenger window to the right of your screen for continuous 24/7 distraction from whatever else you are trying to do on your computer.

Facebook penetration chart - December 2011

In terms of absolute figures the US reigns supreme, with the largest presence on Facebook, counting an estimated 150 million profiles on the social network. But which country actually has the biggest penetration as a percentage of the population? It’s none other than a small sunny Mediterranean island named Cyprus, at least according to data from socialbakers and some quick calculations by Pingdom.

Though we would count the data as far from accurate, since in the absolute Facebook figures there would be people with multiple profiles and businesses, the chart above does show some clear trends on its popularity. More than half, 63%, of the population of Cyprus has a Facebook profile and that’s almost all of the internet users. Cyprus is followed by Hong Kong, Chile, Singapore and Norway.

Facebook for Android brings updated UI, still won’t sync contacts with Galaxy Nexus

Facebook for Android version 1.8

Facebook has updated their Android app, bringing a host of improvements and a new user interface. The new UI brings the Android application in line with what is been offered on iOS and the iPhone. You get an expandable menu on the left, which includes quick-links to your favorites, pages (finally), apps, lists etc. — similar to the functionality offered in the left sidebar on Facebook’s desktop website.

You also get an overlay messages box, so that you can check and respond to messages without having to leave the current page. Facebook is claiming the the new app loads photos and albums faster and so far in testing the app we can confirm that. Nevertheless the entire app continues to feel sluggish and sometimes it takes a number of tries for a page to load.

Some were expecting for the new app to enable contact syncing on the Galaxy Nexus and Android Ice Cream Sandwich (especially since a render of the phone was used in marketing the app as you see above), but as we’ve tested this is not the case — going to ‘Accounts & Sync’ and selecting Facebook does nothing. Google found that Facebook was in violation of their terms of service (TOS) on the way user contact data was handled and had pushed an update on the Nexus S disabling syncing of contacts. The Galaxy Nexus, as Google’s latest lead device, also has this function disabled.

the social network 2 - poke...

This is absolutely hilarious and scarily discerning. A parody trailer of the “the social network 2” where Mark Zuckerberg deletes Facebook and then kills himself… forever. What would the world become without Facebook. How would people so used to broadcasting everything cope and how creepy our virtual interactions would seem in the context of the physical world. Head on after the break to find out.

Google+, Google’s social gamble and why it might work this time

Google+ | Google's social network

Google has taken the wraps off it’s latest and greatest social enterprise, titled Google+. While Google is no stranger to social, this is its most comprehensive endeavor yet, and all out attack against Facebook. Indeed, past attempts only covered narrow social aspects (RIP Google Wave), while Google+ is trying to encompass a whole lot more, like group messaging/chatting, photo and video sharing and of course keeping in touch and sharing with friends.

We think, that, this time it might actually work for Google, and not only because of the quality or the features of the offering, but also because of the hordes of people waiting to jump ship from Facebook. Although Google is no angel, but rather a listed profit-seeking company obsessed with indexing and cataloging everything, Facebook has taken a lot of heat for its privacy practices, or lack of.

A simple browse around the news reports today and visitors’ comments show how many people are anxiously waiting to help Google provide Facebook with some much needed competition. Before you go running to register though, note that for now, Google+ is an invite only service, and that means you’ll have to register your interest and Google will send you an invitation email (no you can’t get an invitation from someone who’s already in Google+).
