Google Chrome speet test

Google has been keeping very busy with updating its Chrome web browser and has today announced a new stable version 10–it’s been only a month since Google launched version 9 of Chrome and just three weeks since the latest beta release. The latest version, 10, of Chrome brings faster JavaScript performance making more complex websites faster.

In addition Google has finally simplified the settings interface. Clicking on the ‘wrench’ and then hitting options now brings you to a dedicated options tab where you can tweak the browser to your heart’s desire and also quickly search for specific settings. The latest version of Chrome now also allows you to securely synchronize passwords between computers by giving users the option to setup a separate passphrase. You can see a demonstration video of the new settings page by clicking below.

FinePix X100 ~ top view

There are few things in this world that can get us more excited than the upcoming FinePix X100 camera. We really can’t wait to get this retro looking but so cutting edge compact shooter in our hands, and it seems we are not the only ones.

FujiFilm Japan has announced that pre-order demand for the camera has been much higher than predicted and there could be delays in delivering the FinePix X100 camera, LC-X100 leather case and LH-X100 lens hood.

Radeon HD 6990 Graphics Card

AMD has just launched its new flagship video card, the dual-GPU Radeon HD 6990. A worthy successor to the Radeon HD 5970, the HD 6990 is made-up of two Cayman GPUs on a single card running at 830Mhz for a total of 3072 stream processors, 192 texture units and two 256-bit memory channels driving 4GB of GDDR5 RAM. The card can provide output to up to six displays simultaneously using AMD’s Eyefinity technology.

As you might have guessed, the Radeon HD 6990 is insanely fast; but the graphics card has also broken another type of record as well, by being the most power hungry (consuming up to 375W at default clock speeds) and most noisy single card ever.

Microsoft IE6 Countdown ~ Usage map

It was born in August 2001 and its name is Internet Explorer 6 (IE6). That same name has been associated with lack of updates, unpatched browser vulnerabilities and disregard for internet standards. Web developers loath the name and it was the reason that a lot of users (at least those in-the-know) jumped ship and moved to Firefox.

Surprisingly, and according to Microsoft, 12% of online users are still using IE6 almost 10 years later. This has led Microsoft to start a campaign to rid the world from the archaic browser and has begun a countdown with the goal to drop its usage to below 1%. Beyond posing a security risk to those using IE6, it also keeps pressure on web developers to go out of their way to make websites work with the beaten and broken old browser.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Samsung’s mobile division executive VP, Lee Don-joo, has come out in a rare display of honesty stating that they will have to rethink the pricing of the company’s latest Android 3.0 tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, in light of Apple’s update of the iPad.

We will have to improve the parts that are inadequate, Lee told Yonhap news agency. Apple made it very thin.

The iPad 2 is slimmer than Samsung’s upcoming flagship tablet, which measures 10.9mm thick compared to 8.8mm for the iPad.

PayPal X Developer Challenge for Android

PayPal is giving away a total of $50,000 as part of it’s X Developer Challenge for Android. The winning entries will hopefully be the best and most innovative Android applications that also integrate PayPal payments, of course.

First, second and third prize winners will each receive $25,000, $15,000 and $10,000 respectively.

The first deadline, to submit an application, is May 14th.

Judging by the prize money, we guess we’ll be seeing a lot more Android applications happily taking your money through PayPal in the future.

iPad 2 ~ What is the gyroscope

One of the new additions to the iPad 2, and all other iPad iterations after it, is the inclusion of a gyroscope something which has been inherited from the iPhone 4.

Simply, the gyroscope together with the device’s accelerometer improves motion sensing accuracy and allows the iPad to measure in which direction you are moving/rotating it in space (roll, pitch and yaw), how much and how fast.

In technical terms, a gyroscope is a device used to measure or maintain orientation, and it’s the former that’s of interest to us here.

Apple Store goes down

The Apple Store, like clockwork, has just gone down; which means one thing: ‘something’ new is coming out today. The online store becomes unavailable whenever Apple is going to release new products and the hotly awaited iPad 2 is the main candidate for today.

We don’t expect the store to come back-up until today’s event has finished. Stay tuned for updates!

Update: Apple Store now back up, iPad 2 added starting from $499.

iPad 2 mock-up ~ Front-facing camera and large speaker port

With only a few hours to go until the official Apple event, a number of photos have appeared on a Chinese tech site of a mock-up posing as the iPad 2. It’s claimed that the mock-up is based on specification given by Apple to case manufacturers so if it is to be believed it should give you an idea of the size of the device and placement of features such as speaker, cameras etc.

Although the basic features of the expected update are there, see front-facing camera, larger speaker and a slimmer profile we’ll go ahead and say that the actual device should look much better and that speaker port does sure look tacky. In any case, the real thing should be arriving any moment now and in the mean time more pictures of the would be iPad 2 below.
