Leica M9-P Edition Hermès limited edition making of - adding the leatherWe can watch high end camera gear being made all day long. We were awed by the commitment and skill of the individuals at the Canon lens factory and now Leica wants to show us a thing or two of its own.

Together with the Leica M Monochrom, the German camera maker also released a new special edition of its M9-P digital camera the M9-P Edition Hermès. Following on the footsteps of previous special editions, like the white Leica M9-P limited edition the Edition Hermès is a very small run of 400 copies, all hand-made.

Leica M Monochrom black-and-white digital camera

So the rumors were true. Instead of an M10, Leica has just announced a black-and-white only camera, the M Monochrom.

We know that at first look you might think that Leica has gone crazy, but we’ve already gone through the benefits of a black-and-white only sensor camera before. By doing away with the color filter the resulting images are sharper, have better dynamic range and less noise.

White Leica M9-P limited edition with 50mm/0.95 Noctilux lens

Neither Leica cameras nor its lenses are very cheap, but when it comes to limited editions, things really get out of hand. The German camera maker has announced the new limited edition white M9-P digital camera, that you see above. The 50 piece only run coincides with the opening of the new Leica Daimaru camera store in Tokyo.

The limited edition goes for a whopping 2,620,000 Japanese yen, translating to around $31,800. Your big pile of cash buys you a limited edition 18.5-megapixel Leica M9-P full-frame digital camera with white leather styling and a matching strap — the standard edition goes for $7,995. You also get the incredible Leica 50mm f/0.95 Noctilux-M lens that by itself commands $10,995.

Leica could be preparing a black-and-white only sensor digital camera (rumor)

Leica M9 digital Rangefinder - black and white

This is a pretty wild rumor, but extremely interesting nonetheless. Leicarumors is reporting that the German camera maker could also be unveiling a digital camera with a black and white only sensor at its upcoming event in Berlin.

Obviously this would be a niche product, but would offer some obvious advantages to Leica’s discerning fan base. Almost all digital camera sensors feature a color filter array in order to be able to record a color image. A typical array features red, green and blue filters that essentially cut out other wavelengths to allow incoming light of that particular color only. The intensity of each color is then recorded and used to recreate the color image. Because of the color filter array, sensors are essentially throwing away a large amount of light that would otherwise hit the sensor. You can see how the most common type of filter, the Bayer color filter, works below.

Leica V-Lux 3 -- rebranded Panasonic FZ150

The Leica and Panasonic partnership has been a long-standing one and has resulted in some fantastic products — especially some incredibly sharp Micro Four Thirds Lenses. We are also used to Leica taking one of Panasonic’s compact shooters, adding an optimized firmware and releasing it as a Leica branded version. Of course the red dot always demands a premium and this is what has happened with the Panasonic Lumix FZ150.

Leica has announced the V-Lux 3 superzoom bridge camera, which is a rebranded FZ150 with a few cosmetic changes. The two cameras share the same 12.1-megapixel CMOS sensor and 24x zoom Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 4.5-108mm f/2.8-5-2 (25-600mm 35mm equivalent) lens. It can shoot up to 12 frames per second at full resolution and is capable of full HD 1080p60 video in AVCHD format. The V-Lux 3 has a 3-inch fully articulating 460,000 dot LCD display

It will start shipping in January 2012 for $949, a $450 premium over the Panasonic FZ150. In order to at least give some grounds for the hefty premium demanded, Leica is packaging the V-Lux 3 with Adobe’s Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements software and a two year warranty.
