Samsung Galaxy Nexus back close-up

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus (read our full review here) is one of the easiest devices to root. That’s because it’s a Google Nexus device and was made that way. Nevertheless, if you’d rather not get into firing commands towards you shiny new smartphone, there is an app that will do everything for you.

The ‘Wugfresh Galaxy Nexus Root Toolkit’ Windows-only application provides one-click unlock and root for both the GSM/HSPA+ and LTE flavors of the Galaxy Nexus. If you don’t have the Android SDK or the Galaxy Nexus driver installed it will install it for you. If you decide that root is not for you then the application offers one-click unroot and re-lock to restore it back to 100 percent stock.

ASUS Transformer Prime to receive update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on 12 January

ASUS Transformer Prime running Android Ice Cream Sandwich

ASUS has taken to its official Facebook page to announce that its Nvidia Tegra 3 tablet will soon be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS). The update will start rolling out on the 12th of January to the 10.1-inch quad-core ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime, making it the first Android tablet to officially receive Android ICS. We are sure this will put a smile on all the lucky Transformer Prime owners out there.

Nevertheless, there has been a backlash from the developer community, as Transformer Prime owners discovered that the tablet’s bootloader is locked. ASUS explains that having a locked bootloader is a Google DRM (Digital Rights Management) requirement in order to allow users to rent videos. ASUS intends to provide an unlock utility. Use of the tool will void your warranty and make Google Video unavailable.

HTC details unlocking tool, Sensation and EVO 3D first — won’t stop locking bootloaders

HTC Sensation

HTC has just detailed out the process for unlocking the bootloaders on its devices via its Facebook page. Unfortunately the company has also taken a step back from its initial unannouncement a few months back that it will stop locking bootloaders on future devices.

To unlock a phone the owner must register for an account through a web tool (coming later this month) and apparently waive liability if anything goes wrong as a result of having an unlocked phone. We are not sure here whether you lose your complete warranty, though it would make sense that although you can screw-up the software and/or brick the phone, hardware should still be covered — announcement says “may void all or parts of your warranty”.

Next step involves using the Android SDK on a computer with the device connected to get a “device identifier token” which you then use in the web tool to receive your unlocking key via email.

The HTC Sensation (global version) will be the first to receive an update, which will enable the unlocking process later this month, followed by the HTC Sensation on T-Mobile and the HTC EVO 3D.
