NVIDIA Tegra Zone Android app

NVIDIA has just announced that its promised application, Tegra Zone, is now live on the Android Market. NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 chips, inheriting from the company’s DNA, can handle high performance 3D graphics effects and while the Android Market is full of games that don’t yet take advantage of such power, the company’s app lets you extract the few games that are optimized for the platform.

Apple event 2nd of March, iPad 2 coming tomorrow?

Apple Event March 2nd 2011 – Is there a new iPad hiding behind this date?

Apple’s special media event is just one day away, taking place at 10AM Pacific time on Wednesday March 2nd. Although the event invitation doesn’t explicitly detail what the event is about, however as you can see from the image above, there’s a very apparent hint, which has re-affirm the rumor mill for an iPad refresh.

Many sources have been unofficially reporting that during tomorrow’s event, Apple will introduce the next generation of the iPad (a.k.a. iPad 2) while it’s also speculated that the next major version of its operating system, iOS 5, will also be previewed during the event. The timing of the event is in line with past events by Apple done during the same period in previous years for iOS updates. The iPad was introduced by Apple in January 2010 and was available for sale in early April. There are also reports that Apple has now stopped production of the original iPad and that it has halted new shipments to retailers.

Vodafone UK network affected by break-in

Vodafone UK network affected by break-in

Vodafone UK has reported that as a result of a break-in at an exchange center in Basingstoke, south central England some customers are experiencing loss of network access (voice, sms and internet). Thankfully the report notes that there hasn’t been any leak of customer’s data.

Word came out on Vodafone’s internet forum while customers who woke up with no mobile access are continuing to vent their frustration on the company’s Facebook page while Twitter is being swamped by reports. Subscribers in the south of England seem to be the most affected.

It does seem a bit odd that a simple break-in has resulted in such a widespread network loss; could it be that someone walked out with a truck-load of network gear or maybe a disgruntled (ex)employee took back some vengeance. Either way it does give you pause to think of how much we’ve come to rely on mobile telephony for our day-to-day life and work.

Update: Vodafone has confirmed that some network and IT equipment has been stole, while voice services are mostly back up and normal service should resume this afternoon.

Google Nexus One Android Handset ~ Getting Gingerbread love

Anxious Nexus One owners are finally getting some official Gingerbread love with Android 2.3.3 now beginning to roll out as an over-the-air update. The Nexus One’s younger brother, the Nexus S is also joining in for the fun getting additional near-field communication (NFC) capabilities, such as the ability to write to rewritable NFC tags, while 2.3.3 also fixes a number of bugs such at the random reboots that had plagued the Nexus S.

This is the first update to Gingerbread for the Nexus One. News broke via Google’s Nexus official Twitter account ending months of ‘agony’ for Nexus One owners which saw their lovely handsets living in the shadow of the Nexus S, with Gingerbread having been promised to be ‘a few weeks’ away.

Nook Color Review

Barnes & Noble Nook Color

It’s been almost three months since this e-reader / tablet landed on our doorstep and I’ve already spent several hours of quality time with it. Barnes & Noble has taken a different approach with its second e-reader device, donning the Nook Color with a full 7-inch color touchscreen and doing away with E-Ink. Despite this move, unsurprisingly, the Nook Color is still a book centric device out of the box.

This review of the Nook Color centers on its suitability as an e-reader device. Despite this I must note that the Nook Color has great potential as a full-fledged tablet and, the never-tiring Android hacking community has really embraced the Nook Color and continues daily to unlock its potential. A follow-up review will be posted soon that will look into the Nook Color as a tablet.

Moving right along, I must say from the kick-off that B&N has created a really great e-reading device that is a pleasure to take everywhere, hold and use and is offering it at a very attractive price, $249. However the Nook Color is not without frustrations and the software experience is still rough around the edges; with each over-the-air update, however, bringing it closer to perfection. Despite these, it still might not be the device for everyone, and we will try to convey both the shortcomings together with the benefits of this device. Hopefully by the end of this lengthy review you should get an idea if this is the right device for you. So read on to find out.
