Samsung smart TV remote with touchpad and voice control

Samsung made sure to remind us all during this year’s CES that it’s already making and selling a boatload of Smart TVs — i.e. connected TV sets that can install and run apps, have a web browser and can download and play on demand movies. Consider that preemptive strike number one against a yet unnamed but much-rumored TV from a certain Cupertino-based company.

LG 55-inch OLED 3D TV

We first saw LG’s 55-inch OLED 3D TV as CES and with the company’s promise of a down-to-earth price for the largest OLED TV yet, our interest peaked. We’ve been waiting for alternative technologies to really challenge LCD and Plasma TVs, and while OLED panels hold a lot of promise, we’ve only seen extremely expensive and small-screened OLED TVs.

The company wasn’t forthcoming on too many details on the set. We know that the 55-inch LG OLED TV uses 4-color pixel technology (RGBW) for more natural colors and that it’s super thin and light at just 4mm thick and weighing 7.5kg (16.5lbs). Initial information point to a fourth quarter release at a yet undetermined price.

LG LM9600 Cinema 3D Smart TV

Google could be tying up with LG to introduce its next version of connected/smart TV software, Google TV. Though we would normally take such news with a grain of salt, the report comes from Bloomberg, based on accounts by two people familiar with the project. The deal between Google and LG would be similar to the ones the search giant had made with HTC for the Nexus One and Samsung for the release of the Nexus S and the Galaxy Nexus, giving LG early access to software.

Web-connected TVs were big news at CES this year, with Samsung introducing several new models in its Smart TV line. Apple is also said to be preparing its own connected and perhaps, talkative TV set.

LG slims Cinema Screen 3D TV bezel to just 1mm and 3D glasses 20% lighter

LG Cinema Screen 3D TV with 1mm bezel

LG has mastered a great line-up for 2012. First you have the humongous 84-inch Ultra Definition QFHD 3D TV, then the world’s largest 55-inch OLED TV with 4-color technology and now it has managed to reduce the bezel on its Cinema 3D TVs to virtually nothing, titled ‘Cinema Screen’ design. We can’t express how happy we are that bezels are finally on a losing streak.

The new Cinema Screen 3D TVs with just 1mm top and side bezel have other tricks up their sleeve us well. First you have Dual Play, whereby two game players can see entirely different full images, as opposed to a traditional split screen — something we already saw in the Vizio Versus and the Sony Playstation 3D display. Then you have 3D Sound Zooming, which claims to synchronize audio with the location of various on-screen objects.

LG 55-inch OLED TV with 4 color pixel technology - front and side

LG is getting together a strong showing for CES 2012. We’ve already seen their 84-inch Ultra Definition QFHD 3D TV and now the company has announced the world’s largest OLED TV. The new 55-inch, 4mm thick OLED TV will make an appearance at CES in Las Vegas next week.

LG Electronics, is claiming that the new OLED TV will produce the most natural colors we’ve seen from any TV, based on their 4-color pixel technology and image processing features. Instead of the typical RGB arrangement found in other televisions, LG’s 4-color pixel technology uses red, green blue and white subpixels. Sharp has been using their own 4 color technology in their Quattron TV sets, with the inclusion of a yellow subpixel as the additional color.

LG 84-inch Ultra Definition 3D TV

Manufacturers just love to shout largest, and LG is certainly in a record breaking mood today. LG Electronics has just unveiled the world’s largest 3D Ultra Definition (UD) TV. By Ultra Definition the company suggests a Quad Full High Definition (QFHD) resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels, which doubles the number of pixels of 1080p on each axis. That’s equivalent to four 1080p TVs stuck together, though not up to a full 4K resolution (which would mean at least 4,000 pixels on the horizontal axis).

The 84-inch behemoth is promising an immersive 3D experience, which we are inclined to believe, and something that LG will be happy to demonstrate at CES 2012 in Las Vegas. The TV will have access to LG’s Smart TV ecosystem with over 1,200 apps and some video content. It’s also set to come with a new Magic Remote with voice recognition and magic gestures. Well, there’s only two weeks left to CES 2012 where we will know more.
