PSA: HTC One X is protected by the original Corning Gorilla Glass, not Gorilla Glass 2

Corning had announced the newest version of its popular fortified glass, Gorilla Glass 2, at CES this year. The second version has the same scratch and impact resistance as its predecessor despite being 20% thinner. Corning later announced on February 27 that it begun initial shipment of the new glass to its customers and that we should expect manufacturers to start revealing products using it by the by second quarter of the year.

It has been assumed that the new HTC One X smartphone is already using the new Gorilla Glass 2 to protect is gorgeous 4.7-inch 720p super LCD2 screen and in fact, a couple of websites have even said so in their reviews.

We’ve got in touch with HTC directly and the company has confirmed that the One X actually uses the original Gorilla Glass and not version 2. It practically plays no significance for end users, since both versions of the glass offer the same level of protection, though we though you should know for the sake of completeness. The HTC One X’s screen is optically laminated to the glass, eliminating any gap between them and bringing the screen closer to the edge anyway.

Corning Gorilla Glass 2: same strength but 20% thinner

It seems that we guessed this one right. Corning has officially announced the new generation of its popular damage-resistant glass. Gorilla Glass 2 has the same scratch and impact resistance as its predecessor despite being 20% thinner.

With thinner cover glass, devices don’t have any excuse for not shedding their holiday fat. So, you can expect slimmer devices and more variety in terms of designs and form factors — maybe we’ll now see more curved screens with Gorilla Glass protection. Also, because the screen will now be closer to your fingers, you will be getting a better touch experience, and better optical performance. If manufacturers choose to optically laminate the screen (i.e. iPhone), the screen will truly seem like it is floating at the edge of the device.

I broke the Galaxy Nexus screen

This is a quote from our recent review of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus: A large glass front, plastic body, limited ruggedization and slippery sides could spell out disaster without a case.

Well, during the holidays I was juggling one too many things and my naked (sin-case) Galaxy Nexus slipped out of my hand and landed on a hard floor from a height of about two feet. Its back cover and battery went flying off, but since the fall wasn’t too bad I picked it up without thinking that anything seriously bad happened to it. As I went to wipe the screen on my shirt I saw the long crack across it, while a piece of glass had chipped from the bottom corner where the phone had landed.

Obviously manufacturers don’t design average devices to survive drops, that’s why rugged smartphones exist. The Galaxy Nexus has a fortified glass screen, but that’s to protect it from scratches, obviously glass can still shatter, and the bigger the surface the easier it is to crack — though we are hopping the new Gorilla Glass 2 material will be more shatter-proof.

Nevertheless this isn’t the first smartphone I’ve dropped; I’m actually a serial phone-dropper. My long-term Android smartphones have been a Nexus One and an HTC Sensation, both of which have suffered some pretty nasty falls (without a case) and both have so far survived pretty well.

Corning Gorilla Glass 2 coming soon. Thinner, stronger? We’ll find out at CES 2012

What could make the world’s most popular fortified glass brand better? We’ll soon find out as Corning comes to CES 2012 in Las Vegas. Gorilla Glass can be found in more than 575 products, including many of our favorite smartphones and tablets. Unofficially you’ll also find Gorilla Glass in the iPhone and iPad.

Corning has just announced that it will be showing off the next generation Gorilla Glass 2 at CES 2012 next week. Details are scarce at the moment besides that the company will be accommodating thinner designs by manufacturers. This could mean that the new Gorilla Glass 2 can be made thinner or easier to integrate in curved designs while maintaining hardness. Thinner cover glass would also mean better touchscreen performance and screen sharpness.

Apple has been using optical lamination to fuse the iPhone’s display to the glass in order to keep designs thinner while improving touch experience as the screen seems to be floating on the surface of the device. There are rumors that the Tegra 3 quad-core 4.7-inch HTC Edge will also have an optically laminated screen.

Galaxy Nexus drops 1.8m, joins the ranks of shattered glass-screened phones

It comes at time in a glass-screened gadget’s life when it will be accidentally dropped. Some will survive, others will be shattered. A user over at XDA forums going by the name tamarian, was unfortunate enough to drop his new Samsung Galaxy Nexus from a height of 1.8 meters (5.9 feet) and onto some unforgiving kitchen tiles. You can see the result in the picture above.

The Galaxy Nexus’ 4.65-inch display doesn’t feature Corning Gorilla Glass, rather another type of fortified glass, which seems to shatter just as much; though 1.8m is a big drop by any measure. Our hearts are with you tamarian, we hope you can get it fixed soon.

Galaxy Nexus not Gorilla Glass but another type of fortified glass

For anyone who hasn’t yet heard of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, it’s going to be the first device to carry Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It’s also a large screened, 4.65-inch, Super AMOLED HD curved beauty. We’ve already discussed how Samsung managed to achieve a 1280×720 HD resolution on the AMOLED screen using PenTile Matrix technology and any caveats that might entail. Well there has also been a lot of discussion whether the Galaxy Nexus features the scratch resistant and durable Gorilla Glass to protect its large display.

Corning, the makers of Gorilla Glass, have now confirmed through Twitter that the Galaxy Nexus doesn’t use their trademark technology.
