Know your ports: Mini-USB vs. micro-USB

Mini-USB (left) v.s. Micro-USB (right) male plugs

There are several variations of the USB port and we understand that things can be confusing or unclear. The most popular variations of the standard USB plug are mini-USB and micro-USB (specifically mini-B on the left and micro-B on the right as you can see in the photos). Mini-USB is smaller than the standard USB port and micro-USB is even smaller at half the thickness. Both ports were introduced so as to offer standardized USB connectivity and power to increasingly smaller and thinner portable devices.

The micro-USB (right), which was introduced in 2007, is said to replace mini-USB (left), and is now the most widely used — micro-USB ports can now be found in most smartphones, tablets and other portable devices. The biggest benefit in having one standardized port is that you only need one cable and one charger for all your devices. Nevertheless many devices still carry a mini-USB port but its quite easy to distinguish between them. We’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Well this piece of news has been analysed, probed and dissected from every tech blog out there over and over again. We’ve intentionally stayed away from this, waiting for the dust to settle. However I’ve ran across this video which I found hilarious, enjoy.

Samsung Mobile Unpacked teaser for IFA Berlin 2011

We broke the news this morning about Samsung’s upcoming Super AMOLED Plus sporting smartphones. So what do we get now, a teaser video that ‘something big is coming’ at the Samsung Unpacked event at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin on September 1, 2011.

So what does a bunch of young hipsters have in their hands while treading the streets of old Europe? A ball of light? From the video, which you can find after the break, we can safely deduct that ‘something big’ will be a new smartphone. Could this be the announcement of the much rumored and awaited Nexus Prime, the first smartphone to run Android Ice Cream Sandwich on a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and a 4.65-inch 1280×720 Super AMOLED screen. Color us excited!

Why we love tech: Björk’s Biophilia is an album wrapped in an app; or is it the other way round?

Björk Biophilia iPad app

Biophilia is a project/album by Icelandic singer-actress-composer Björk. What makes it so special is that it’s the first interactive ‘app album’ putting as much importance on the experience and visuals as the music. Björk has composed part of the album on an iPad and so completing the circle the application has been released, in collaboration with Apple, on iTunes for iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod touch).

The ‘host’ application is free to download and includes the theme song, Cosmogony. The host app is an interactive 3D map of the ‘cosmos’ made up by the different songs. Each additional song takes the form of an in-app purchase for an eventual total of ten songs for the album. Every song operates as a mini-app with different visuals and animations, a game, moving score for the song with karaoke playback and an essay. There are currently two songs that have been released, Crystalline and Virus, each available for $1.99.

Putting any discussion on excessive commercialization to the side, this is one of the most exciting and ground breaking music related productions we’ve seen. What’s important is that you are not checking your friends’ status on Facebook or sending an email while listening to the music, but actually interacting with the song. Art direction by interactive artist Scott Snibbe is excellent, though quite abstract, and certainly the experience is engaging. Although this is something that could have ended in just being a gimmick it certainly is not. We only lament the fact that this is an iOS app only.

You can find more about the app in the intro video narrated by the man himself, David Attenborough, together with the song Crystalline, after the break.

Samsung Super AMOLED HD screens could be coming to smartphones and tablets this fall

Samsung Super AMOLED

So far Samsung hadn’t been able to pack pixels densely enough to create high definition AMOLED displays for mobile phones. By high definition (HD), we mean any display with a resolution higher than 1280×720 (720p). OLED-Info is now claiming that Samsung has been able to break the existing pixel density barrier.

The new technology will enable Samsung to create high-def AMOLED screens, named Super AMOLED HD, while the new fabrication process is said to also be cheaper than LCD screens, so expect quite a lot of devices to be packing these screens in the future. Compared to LCDs, AMOLED screens offer better viewing angles and better black levels. The new displays will use PenTile Matrix technology, that some argue does not offer the full resolution claimed, as each pixel is not made up of three (red, green, and blue) subpixels

Google Maps Bubble Button shortcuts

So Google must have been reading my mind, because I have been wishing for a way to quickly jump from a Maps result to Navigation or just quickly call a business I’ve searched for. Google Maps v5.9 for Android, which was released yesterday, has added the option for two ‘bubble buttons’ which act as shortcuts to call or navigate to a result from the main map area. The feature has to be enabled manually first, so read on to find out how.

The latest version of Google Maps also brings voice and ring tone notifications for Transit Navigation as well as support for Transit Navigation on tablets.

Google fights back with the acquisition of Motorola Mobility

Google Mountain View Headquarters

Google has announced that it will be acquiring Motorola Mobility — these are the guys that brought you the Droid, the Atrix, the Xoom and yep the StarTAC back in the day — for $12.5 billion. The announcement was made in a blog post by Google CEO Larry Page.

Google reiterated the commitment of Motorola to the Android platform while pointing out that the acquisition of Motorola will strengthen Google’s patent portfolio helping it to fend off legal attacks by Microsoft and Apple. Just to put some numbers into the equation, Google has around 1,000 patents while Motorola has around 17,000 patents. Larry goes on saying that Android will remain an open platform and that Google will run Motorola as a separate company; which we are sure has put Google’s Android partners at ease. Both HTC and Samsung have come out with similar statements in the lines of We welcome today’s news, which demonstrates that Google is deeply committed to defending Android, its partners, and the entire ecosystem.

Full press release after the break.

HTC Sensation in hand

HTC Sensation owners in Europe are slowly getting an over-the-air (OTA) update to Android 2.3.4. The update is being rolled out to different countries in stages, so don’t worry if you haven’t yet received a notification for the update — though it might help going to ‘Settings > About Phone > Software updates’ and pressing ‘Check Now’. Mind you the update is for unbranded, i.e. not carrier specific, handsets. Branded handset owners might have to wait a bit longer for the update to be rolled out by their carriers; we will post a guide on how-to change your carrier ID so that you can get the update now.

Sony hasn’t been keeping a very tight lid on the upcoming Alpha A77 digital camera. The, still, un-announced camera has now appeared as a nominee for a Good Design Award; an award system operated by the Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization.

Besides a new side view of the camera, the organization’s website confirms some of the specifications we’ve already reported on and adds a couple of new exciting details on the A77.

Could this be the bigger and thinner iPhone 5?

iPhone 5 leaked photo

Time really does fly; why, it seems like yesterday that everyone was raving and speculating about the iPhone 4. Well, it’s actually been over a year now since the iPhone 4 was introduced, and of course speculation for the next Apple smartphone is running feverishly high. Apple has already unveiled iOS 5 and the rumor mill on the iPhone 5 that will join the operating system keeps churning.

It’s not hard to imagine that the iPhone 5 will be thinner, we’re used to Apple making things thinner, and well, with the success of bigger screened phones, it would seem logical that iPhone 5’s display will venture north of the usual 3.5-inches. So today’s leak comes from guigsh on MacRumors forum, who claims to have taken a picture of the iPhone 5 at the office of a French operator yesterday. It certainly matches the dimensions we’ve seen before, but so does an iPhone 4 with a little stretching and squishing in Photoshop. So what do you think?

Skype for Android with video calls

When video chatting was initially released on Skype for Android there was only official support for four devices. That didn’t stop many of you however from enabling video calling ‘un-officially’.

Skype has just updated their application, version 2.1.0.46, with added support for 17 more smartphones and tablets. Skype is forewarning however that you if your device is running Android 2.2 (Froyo), only the back camera will work, as only Android 2.3+ allows access to the front facing camera.

HTC details unlocking tool, Sensation and EVO 3D first — won’t stop locking bootloaders

HTC Sensation

HTC has just detailed out the process for unlocking the bootloaders on its devices via its Facebook page. Unfortunately the company has also taken a step back from its initial unannouncement a few months back that it will stop locking bootloaders on future devices.

To unlock a phone the owner must register for an account through a web tool (coming later this month) and apparently waive liability if anything goes wrong as a result of having an unlocked phone. We are not sure here whether you lose your complete warranty, though it would make sense that although you can screw-up the software and/or brick the phone, hardware should still be covered — announcement says “may void all or parts of your warranty”.

Next step involves using the Android SDK on a computer with the device connected to get a “device identifier token” which you then use in the web tool to receive your unlocking key via email.

The HTC Sensation (global version) will be the first to receive an update, which will enable the unlocking process later this month, followed by the HTC Sensation on T-Mobile and the HTC EVO 3D.
