Nokia Lumia 800 smartphone in white front and back

Choosing the right colors and producing the polycarbonate body for its Lumia smartphones has been quite a journey for Nokia. The Lumia 800 was initially launched last October in the now familiar cyan, magenta and black hues and as promised (and not to be outdone by Samsung), Nokia has just announced the release of the all white version, first seen on the Nokia Lumia N9.

Samsung Galaxy S II profile image showing its 8.49mm thickness

The Samsung Galaxy S III (SGS3), rumored successor to the incredibly successful Galaxy S II, is a hotly anticipated device, so expect to be bombarded with rumors and supposed insider leaks until it becomes official. Samsung has stated that we will not be seeing the SGS3 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this month, but rather at a dedicated Samsung event in the first half of the year.

After Samsung threw the gauntlet to the rumor mill, we’ve heard of reports for a potential release of the SGS3 in March, April and July. Now you can add May to the mix as well, since a Korean publication citing industry sources claims that the SGS3 will be released in May.

Giant RX-87 Gundam statue in Odaiba Tokyo

Ah Japan, the country where giant robots roam free. Well not exactly, at least not yet, but you can’t deny the Far Eastern nation’s affinity to all things robotic.

A giant RX-78 mobile suite Gundam statue made its first appearance in the Tokyo skyline in the summer of 2009, measuring 60 foot tall and weighing 35 tonnes. The statue was erected by Bandai, a Japanese toy maker and video game company, in Tokyo’s Odaiba island. Odaiba is an artificial island in the Tokyo bay hosting a number of leisure parks, exhibitions and shopping malls. Since then, the statue has been dismantled, re-erected and moved around.

Avid Studio for iPad video editing application

The iPad has already demonstrated that it does indeed have the chops for some serious content creation. While a touch interface may not be suited for some tasks, it’s perfect for others, and video editing would be one of them. Avid, a name synonymous with prosumer video and audio production, has just released an iPad version of its Avid Studio application, which will now go head-to-head against Apple’s own iMovie.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus back close-up

A lucky Verizon Galaxy Nexus (check out our in-depth review here) owner got an over-the-air (OTA) update notification for a brand new Android Ice Cream Sandwich build, version 4.0.4 IMM30B. We will some help from the forums over at Android Central he was able to pull the update from his device and then share it with the entire Android community.

As there is no official changelog, obviously, you’ll have to rely on users’ comment on what has been fixed/improved in this latest Android release. Discounting for any ‘placebo effects’, those who’ve updated are reporting UI responsiveness and speed improvements, better 4G/3G switching and improved signal strength among others.

Olympus OM-D E-M5 front with optional battery grip

So we finally have full images of the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Micro Four Thirds (MFT) camera. You can enjoy the camera in its entire front and back glory, together with a detachable grip and optional battery grip. Each of the grips comes its unique shutter button.

One can see the articulated rear 3-inch OLED display, integrated EVF and the large bulge at the top, which we would guess hosts a pop-up flash. Olympus is truly pushing the pro camera theme with the detachable grip, which gives the camera an SLR-style format. Panasonic has the G and GH MFT series cameras with SLR-style grips while Olympus is only producing rangefinder-style bodies.

Pentax K-01 MILC hands-on

The Pentax K-01 mirrorless camera surely has a unique design, it’s small but thick, as a brick. There’s a reason for that though, as it can accept the huge number of K-mount lenses, designers had to maintain the format’s 45.46 mm flange back distance (the distance from the lens mount to the sensor). To compare, Micro Four Thirds has a 20mm flange back, Sony’s E-mount 18mm and Fujifilm’s new X-mount just 17.7mm.

Love it or hate it, it’s got some pretty tasty internals, including the same excellent 16.28-megapixel APS-C sensor as the Pentax K-5, of course compatibility with excellent Pentax APS-C SLR glass, 1080p video capabilities and even an HDR mode directly selectable on the mode dial — you can find a full list of specs and pictures in our initial coverage here.

Nokia Lumia polycarbonate body cyan and magenta

In a tech world dominated by black and silver, Nokia took a different path when designing the polycarbonate body for its Lumia smartphone series. In a post at Conversations by Nokia, materials designer Tiina Aarras takes us through the long decision process that led to the iconic cyan, magenta, black and white bodies of the Lumia N9, 800 and 900.

An integral part of the design is that the plastic in not painted on top, the color that you see is the color of the plastic. So if you scratch the body, you would still have the same bright original color. From the designer’s mouth, it’s not just plastic, it’s a single piece of polycarbonate plastic. And they’re not just colors – they’re the most saturated, intense colors you’ll find on a phone.

Corning takes glass into the future with ‘A Day Made of Glass’ video

Corning 'A day of glass' video

For a company that deals exclusively with glass (and ceramics) these are exciting times. Corning’s Gorilla Glass has already found its way into hundreds of devices, like smartphones and tablets, while we’ve already seen the announcement of the improved Gorilla Glass 2 earlier this year.

Corning doesn’t just stop at fortified glass however and the company has released a new video of how it envisions glass may come into our lives in the future. Obviously all this is very conceptual at the moment, including electrochomic glass that can change in color and translucency, big architectural display glass that is touch sensitive, automotive glass and of course tablet display glass that can even have anti-microbial properties for use in medical facilities.

The full video is after the break for your enjoyment.

Samsung Galaxy S Advance Android smartphone

Samsung already made it clear that the Galaxy S III won’t be making it to MWC 2012 in Barcelona this month. Instead we’ve been promised other “exciting new mobile products.” One of these new products is the 4-inch Super AMOLED Samsung Galaxy S Advance, which was announced early this week.

Well now we have confirmed pricing and a shipping date for the smartphone loaded with a 1GHz Exynos 4210 dual-core SoC, 768MB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and a 5-megapixel rear and 1.3-megapixel front cameras. The device is already up for pre-order in the UK for around £350 ($550) including VAT and without a contract. Shipments are expected to begin on the week of February 27th, i.e. the same week as the MWC.

Android users most likely to get laid on first date, use their phones in the bathroom

Galaxy Nexus in the bathroom

So lets tackle the last bit first. A marketing agency with too much time in its hands, conducted a survey between 1,000 Americans on their bathroom habits, and specifically those related to the use of mobile phones while in the bathroom. It seems the old newspaper is on the outs in the bathroom as well, as people turn to their smartphones to kill time during those urgent moments. From the individuals asked, 74 percent of men and 76 percent of women fessed up to using their mobile phones in the bathroom — we would guess that the rest were simply lying.

63 percent have answered a phone call, 41 percent initiated one, 67 percent read a text and 38 percent surfed the web. Now that you have this wealth of knowledge in your hands, the next bit of info is that bathroom use is high for Android users at 87 percent, BlackBerry users at 84 percent and 77 percent for iPhone users. The moral of the story, you’re not alone.
