Rumor: the iPad HD will feature advanced haptic feedback technology from Senseg that touches you back

Apple iPad 3 event invitation

Stuff-Review was the first to consider that the iPad HD (a.k.a. iPad 3) could have some form of advanced haptic feedback. Our speculation was based on the iPad event invite, which calls for something new to see and touch. Apple is no stranger to this technology since it has been doing its own research, and it would just really make sense to have tactile feedback technology in the iPad.

Advanced haptics would enrich the iPad experience by bringing the sense of touch to the mix. It would make typing on the iPad akin to typing on a physical keyboard, provide tactile feedback on user interface interactions and it would bring gaming to a whole different level. Then you never know what else might come up from enterpreneuring app developers.

Apple iPad 3 (iPad HD) event invitation - finger touching calendar

We’ve been trying to restrain from posting too many news on Apple’s upcoming next generation iPad, which should be announced on March 7th, but this is an interesting piece of news.

It’s long been speculated that new iPad will follow the same naming convention as previous generations of iOS products, i.e. will be called the iPad 3. However a new rumor suggests that it will actually be called iPad HD. Although we generally dislike the trend of simply slapping “HD” on everything, it could make sense as the key new feature of the next iPad is expected to be its high definition 2,048 x 1,536-pixel display.

Apple iPad 3 event invitation

You had been warned to hold off any iPad purchases until further notice. So finally we have confirmation on the official announcement for Apple’s next generation tablet, the iPad 3. Apple has been sending out invites for an event at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco on Wednesday 7th of March at 10am PST (1pm EST or 6pm GMT).

The invite shows a finger touching, a pretty sharp, iPad screen. The tagline reads We have something you really have to see. And touch. It’s been widely rumored that the iPad 3 will feature an extremely high resolution “retina” display effectively quadrupling the iPad 2’s effective pixels. The iPad 3 resolution is said to be 2048×1536 against the iPad 2’s 1024×768, which would really be a sight.

Now we’re pretty interested in the last part of the tagline. We already know touch, so could Apple be eluding to something new in the iPad 3, like let’s say, advanced haptic feedback. continue reading

iPad 3 leaked back with new camera and gentler curvature

We’re expecting an iPad 3 announcement early next month. We won’t be repeating all the earlier rumors in this post but you can check our timeline below. One of these rumors points to the obvious inclusion of a higher resolution rear camera with a bigger lens. So today, a Chinese publication claims to have images of the iPad 3 showing the refreshed back of the device.

Scalado Remove mobile device software technology lets you remove unwanted ‘objects’ from your photos on the fly

Scalado Remove mobile device imaging software

We’ve all more or less faced the same issue. You’re trying to take the picture of a loved one or a postcard worthy photo of a beautiful monument, yet all these other moving ‘objects’ keep coming into your frame. Well you could take a number of photos and then use a PC photo editing application, like Photoshop, to get rid of unwanted people in the photo but that’s hardly very convenient. The solution comes from Scalado, a mobile device imaging specialist. The company has just announced a new software technology called Remove that allows you to remove unwanted objects from images on the fly.

First, you take a shot with your mobile device’s camera, then you select unwanted objects from the captured image by using your device’s touchscreen. The software takes a number of additional shots and using some clever imaging technology, stitches them up on the fly to produce a cleaned-up result. Of course Remove only works with moving objects, i.e. people or other members of the animal kingdom.

iPad Google Search app

Apple follows a once a year update cycle for most of its main products. The company has, like clockwork, updated the iPhone and the iPad every year since their release, personal computers like the MacBook Air, have also enjoyed regular yearly updates.

We’ve been hearing of the iPad 3 for quite a while now, as with many Apple products, rumors started practically as soon as the current generation iPad 2 hit the market. However, now we’re seemingly getting close to the actual announcement of the iPad 3 that should come within the next few weeks. Initially we reported on the possibility of an Apple event this month, now the word on the street is that Apple may hold a new iPad event on the first week of March.

Android users most likely to get laid on first date, use their phones in the bathroom

Galaxy Nexus in the bathroom

So lets tackle the last bit first. A marketing agency with too much time in its hands, conducted a survey between 1,000 Americans on their bathroom habits, and specifically those related to the use of mobile phones while in the bathroom. It seems the old newspaper is on the outs in the bathroom as well, as people turn to their smartphones to kill time during those urgent moments. From the individuals asked, 74 percent of men and 76 percent of women fessed up to using their mobile phones in the bathroom — we would guess that the rest were simply lying.

63 percent have answered a phone call, 41 percent initiated one, 67 percent read a text and 38 percent surfed the web. Now that you have this wealth of knowledge in your hands, the next bit of info is that bathroom use is high for Android users at 87 percent, BlackBerry users at 84 percent and 77 percent for iPhone users. The moral of the story, you’re not alone.

B&N Nook Tablet easy SD card root

The Barnes & Noble Nook Color was one of the most easily rooted devices, and practically un-brickable, because it was possible to boot from a microSD card. Its successor, the B&N Nook Tablet, is now following in the same footsteps. The endeavoring forum users over at XDA Developers have just developed a method of rooting the Nook Tablet using an SD card.

Requirements include a microSD card larger than 2GB, preferably and a Windows or Mac computer. As with the Nook Color methods, the process involves flashing an image to the SD card. You then insert the freshly created SD card into your Nook Tablet and reboot. The SD card image handles the rooting process automatically and also gives you the full Android Market and Google apps to boot.

iPad 2 iMovie ~ Selecting the best shots

As we are coming closer to a potential launch of the iPad 3, there’s increasing speculation on the potential specs of Apple’s next tablet. One of longest standing rumors is that the iPad 3 will have a “retina” display with a resolution of 2048×1536 — that is double the 1024×768 resolution of the iPad 2 on each axis or four times the number of pixels.

Well, some developers have dissected the files contained within iBooks 2 and iTunes U that were released yesterday, and found a number of graphics files appended as ‘iPad@2x’. One of these images is the bookmark graphic and as then name suggests it’s double the size of the graphic for the normal iPad.

Rumor: Apple preparing for an iPad 3 and iOS 5.1 event in February? What to expect

Apple iBooks on iPad

One of most anticipated hardware launches of the year is none other than the third iteration of the world’s most successful tablet. The iPad, which made tablets relevant, has transformed the way we consume content on the go, and even how we create it. The iPad 2 and iOS 4.3 were announced at a special Apple event on March 2nd 2011 and released on March 11th.

Betting on Apple’s one year update cycle, we would expect the iPad 3 to be announced around the same period this year. But what do we know about the iPad 3? Well, Apple devices have generally been going in one direction. With each iteration, they usually get faster, thinner, with better battery life and a better screen. It’s almost certain that the iPad 3 will feature a faster chipset, probably an Apple A6 quad-core processor and better graphics. One of the longest standing rumors has been that the next generation iPad will have a high resolution display; most rumors point to a 2048 x 1536, which is effectively double that of the current iPad 2 on each axis. The improved A6 graphic processing unit (GPU) is claimed to be able to handle the quadruple pixels.

Why we love tech: David Hockney’s ‘A Bigger Picture’ is contemporary art done on an iPad

The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire, in 2011. iPad drawing printed on paper by David Hockney

David Hockney is one of the most influential contemporary British artists. Born in 1937, with a career spanning more than 50 years, he has relentlessly acquired mastery in a number of media. David Hockney has made paintings, drawings, lithographic and etching prints, designed stage sets and worked with photography and photocollage. In his long, and successful, career he has also always embraced new technologies. David Hockney’s latest exhibition, titled ‘A Bigger Picture’ and running between January 21st and April 9th 2012 at the Royal Academy of Arts in London is a testament to this.

The exhibition is devoted to landscapes and includes more than 150 works by the artist, most of which were created in the last decade while many are massive in size. The vivid works were inspired by Hockney’s native Yorkshire. After Hockney’s 30 year long stay in California and Los Angeles, where he created his famous paintings portraying alluring poolside scenes he returned to his home country and has been based in Bridlington, a small seaside town in east Yorkshire, around 65 miles from Bradford where the artist was born. The exhibition includes oil paintings, watercolors and more than 50 drawings created on an iPad and then printed onto paper. There are also a number of videos created for the exhibition.

Cool tech: better haptic feedback for smartphones and tablets thanks to a new wafer-thin device

Vivitouch dielectric elastomer device for haptic feedback

Smartphone and tablet use has exploded and our mobile devices have become very capable multitaskers and game machines. Your mobile phone or tablet may already give you some form of haptic or tactile feedback through vibrations caused by a small electric motor turning an unbalanced mass. This solution, though it has served us well for some time now, takes up valuable space, consumes a lot of power and is very limited to the type of feedback it can provide. Our other senses are being catered for by better displays and graphics and better audio but not much has changed on the way we feel our devices.

Well, one company has a working technology that promises to improve haptic feedback in all portable devices. Vivitouch is a technology belonging to a company named Artificial Muscle that envisions possible applications in smartphones, tablets, game controllers, remote controls and even vehicle control panels.

HP TouchPad now seen running Android 4.0 thanks to CyanogenMod 9 (video)

HP TouchPad running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

The CyanogenMod Android custom ROM may have just reached an important milestone of 1 million installs, but as we’ve said before, it’s getting ready for even bigger things to come. One of these, is to liberate the HP TouchPad from the uncertainties and lack of app support of WebOS.

We’ve already seen CyanogenMod 7 (CM7) running on the tablet. But the install was plagued with a bunch of issues and CM7 is based on the not so tablet-friendly Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

The CM team has been fiendishly working on the latest version of the ROM, CyanogenMod 9 (CM9), which is based on the spanking new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Although a final stable build of CM9 has not yet been released for any device, the aftermarket ROM has already found its place on the HP TouchPad. It also seems that significant progress has been made since the last time we saw the TouchPad flirting with Android and CM. As you can see in the preview video below, everything is working pretty smoothly, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Only key sticking points remain the camera and video playback.
