Olympus OM-D leaked brochure

It’s been a teaser campaign alright. We first caught wind of the rumored Olympus OM-D mirrorless interchangeable lens camera (MILC) when the company registered it as a trademark with the US Patent and Office at the beginning of the year together with the start of the “OH MY GOODNESS!” campaign.

Ever since, we’ve been getting little, tiny, bite-sized pieces of information, such as the first rumored specs and the first leaked pictures. It’s been a long road however, up to rumored February 8th announcement for the CP+ 2012 camera show in Yokohama, Japan.

Pentax K-01 yellow with front flash open

We were the first to report that today was going to be a Pentax day. The camera maker, has just announced a the K-01 (pronounced kay- zero-one), a mirrorless APS-C camera that features a standard Pentax K-mount.

Together with the camera, Pentax has also cheered on the accomplishment of creating the world’s thinnest interchangeable lens, the 9.2mm (0.36 inch) thick DA 40mm f/2.8 XS lens. While we’ve seen a number of small pancakes in the past, particularly for MILC systems with smaller sensors, like Micro Four Thirds, this is truly tiny compared to other APS-C lenses. Pentax is no stranger to thin lenses, as it already has a 15mm thick 40mm f/2.8 Limited pancake lens.

Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 update

After several weeks of testing, Apple has finally released a software update for systems running Mac OS X Lion, bumping up the version to 10.7.3. The update includes a number of essential fixes and security patches. We particularly note that the update promises to fix Wi-Fi connection issues when waking from sleep, which is something that our MacBook Air (complete review here) has been suffering from. The software also includes a new version of Safari, 5.1.3 and adds additional language support.

To check for the update on your Mac OS X Lion computer, click on the ‘Apple’ logo at the top-left, then ‘Software Update’. Be sure to have a recent back up of your system before you install the update (e.g. through Time Machine). It’s a quite weighty download, ours measures 730.6MB. We’ll try to update you once we have a chance to test it out on our devices and if this finally fixes Wi-Fi issues on the MacBook Air.

Samsung Galaxy S III will come before June, no MWC announcement

Samsung Galaxy S III mock-up

Samsung has just released a statement confirming that the successor of the popular Galaxy S II Android smartphone will be unveiled at a dedicated event during the first half of 2012 and not at Mobile World Congress 2012 (MWC) in Bacerlona this month.

The Galaxy S II has been incredibly successful, having outsold every other Android smartphone out there. The device was announced at last year’s MWC in February 2011, but only shipped in June to European and Asian customers and in September in the US.

We would say that it only makes sense for Samsung not to cannibalize the sales of its existing line with the announcement of a successor this early in the year and before any potential shipping date. The Galaxy S III will also be big news, based on popularity of the SGS II, so we would think that Samsung doesn’t want any other manufacturer stealing its thunder. MWC will see the announcement of a cornucopia of new smartphones and tablets, including a rumored high-resolution 10-inch tablet from Samsung.

Pentax K-01 with strap

We already more or less know that the Pentax K-01 mirrorless camera, designed in collaboration with Marc Newson, will be announced tomorrow. We now have the first images of the K-01 camera and the new DA 40mm f/2.8 XS lens.

The camera has the rounded lines that we would expect from a Marc Newson design, and below you can also see the K-01 in all three colors, including a really bright yellow — we know that Pentax has a thing for bright colors if the K-r is any indication.

We can’t say we are too enamored with the design, as we are with the design of the Fujifilm X-Pro1 let’s say, but if this camera is priced competitively, as most Pentax cameras are, it will be great value for money. After all, image quality is expected to be top-notch, as this camera is rumored to have the same 16-megapixel sensor as the excellent Pentax K-5. Another big selling point of this MILC (mirrorless interchangeable lens camera) is that it will be compatible with a huge selection of current Pentax K-mount lenses; that’s a big advantage for anyone already invested in the system, as well as over other mirrorless systems with more limited lens choice.

Fujifilm sold 100,000 X100 cameras in nine months

Fujifilm X100 top

A hundred seems to be Fujifilm’s lucky number. The Japanese camera-maker slid an interesting piece of info in its third-quarter earnings presentation. Sales of the X100 high-end compact camera surpassed the company’s expectations, with Fujifilm selling 100,000 units in just nine months.

It’s quite an accomplishment considering that the X100 is selling for around $1,200 and that it’s a niche camera product with a fixed prime lens and not the most straightforward controls. Bear in mind that for the first few months of its release, it was practically impossible to get hold of one. No wonder that every other camera manufacturer is trying to get into the same bandwagon, i.e. release a retro-styled high-end mirrorless cameras.

Undoubtedly Fujifilm has created quite a stir in the digital camera world with its retro looking X-series cameras putting image quality and full manual controls as priorities. The Fujifilm X100 was one of our favorite pieces of tech for 2011, and the company recently announced the X-Pro1 interchangeable camera, improving on already amazing X100.

You can find more information on the X-Pro1 in our initial coverage here, check-out over forty minutes of hands-on videos and have a look at a comparison against other high-end mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras (MILCs).

HTC Villed leaked hands-on video

The HTC Ville has been in the rumor mill since last November and it’s only reasonable to expect that we will be seeing it at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in late February. Well, it seems the Android device was too anxious to hit the limelight and it has popped-up in an early hands-on video. Although it should be tramped in specs by the quad-core 4.7-inch 720p HTC Edge, it’s definitely no slouch. The Ville is said to have a 4.3-inch 540×960 qHD screen, and run on a 1.5GHz dual-core processor.

While a potential successor to the incredibly popular Samsung Galaxy S II, i.e. the Galaxy S III, is monopolizing our interest, the company just announced a new and reasonably well-specced mid-range phone. It’s powered by a very capable 1GHz Exynos 4210 dual-core processor, 768MB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage with a 5-megapixel rear and 1.3-megapixel front cameras. MSN Visualizer

Using some smart HTML5 code, Swiss design studio Hinderling Volkart has created a showcase website on behalf of MSN, which combines Flickr images and song lyrics together with music to create a random and visually stunning result.

Music comes courtesy of the independent British record label, Ninja Tune. Images are picked at random matching each word from the song’s lyrics with a picture on Flickr; the lyrics themselves are displayed in a typical Metro UI typographical manner. The entire player reminds us of the Zune software player.

Pentax Mark Newson designed camera London event invitation

We’ll file this into ironic. We were day-dreaming during the weekend over the old Asahi Pentax, and today we received the above invitation for a new product launch event by Pentax in London on February 2nd. The new camera has been designed in collaboration with Sydney-born industrial designer Marc Newson, famous for combining smooth organic lines and bright vivid colors into his products.

The timing matches previous rumors for a new K-mount camera announcement from Pentax, just in time for the CP+ camera show in Yokohama. All rumors point to a new mirrorless interchangeable lens camera (MILC) to be named Pentax K-01. Again quoting previous rumors, the K-01 will have the same 16-megapixel sensor as the K-5, it will support K-mount lenses but will come with its own new DA 40mm f2.8 lens that is less than 1cm thick.

B&N Nook Tablet easy SD card root

The Barnes & Noble Nook Color was one of the most easily rooted devices, and practically un-brickable, because it was possible to boot from a microSD card. Its successor, the B&N Nook Tablet, is now following in the same footsteps. The endeavoring forum users over at XDA Developers have just developed a method of rooting the Nook Tablet using an SD card.

Requirements include a microSD card larger than 2GB, preferably and a Windows or Mac computer. As with the Nook Color methods, the process involves flashing an image to the SD card. You then insert the freshly created SD card into your Nook Tablet and reboot. The SD card image handles the rooting process automatically and also gives you the full Android Market and Google apps to boot.
