Android users most likely to get laid on first date, use their phones in the bathroom

Galaxy Nexus in the bathroom

So lets tackle the last bit first. A marketing agency with too much time in its hands, conducted a survey between 1,000 Americans on their bathroom habits, and specifically those related to the use of mobile phones while in the bathroom. It seems the old newspaper is on the outs in the bathroom as well, as people turn to their smartphones to kill time during those urgent moments. From the individuals asked, 74 percent of men and 76 percent of women fessed up to using their mobile phones in the bathroom — we would guess that the rest were simply lying.

63 percent have answered a phone call, 41 percent initiated one, 67 percent read a text and 38 percent surfed the web. Now that you have this wealth of knowledge in your hands, the next bit of info is that bathroom use is high for Android users at 87 percent, BlackBerry users at 84 percent and 77 percent for iPhone users. The moral of the story, you’re not alone.

Samsung Galaxy S III will come before June, no MWC announcement

Samsung Galaxy S III mock-up

Samsung has just released a statement confirming that the successor of the popular Galaxy S II Android smartphone will be unveiled at a dedicated event during the first half of 2012 and not at Mobile World Congress 2012 (MWC) in Bacerlona this month.

The Galaxy S II has been incredibly successful, having outsold every other Android smartphone out there. The device was announced at last year’s MWC in February 2011, but only shipped in June to European and Asian customers and in September in the US.

We would say that it only makes sense for Samsung not to cannibalize the sales of its existing line with the announcement of a successor this early in the year and before any potential shipping date. The Galaxy S III will also be big news, based on popularity of the SGS II, so we would think that Samsung doesn’t want any other manufacturer stealing its thunder. MWC will see the announcement of a cornucopia of new smartphones and tablets, including a rumored high-resolution 10-inch tablet from Samsung.

HTC Villed leaked hands-on video

The HTC Ville has been in the rumor mill since last November and it’s only reasonable to expect that we will be seeing it at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in late February. Well, it seems the Android device was too anxious to hit the limelight and it has popped-up in an early hands-on video. Although it should be tramped in specs by the quad-core 4.7-inch 720p HTC Edge, it’s definitely no slouch. The Ville is said to have a 4.3-inch 540×960 qHD screen, and run on a 1.5GHz dual-core processor.

Samsung Galaxy S Advance Android smartphone

While a potential successor to the incredibly popular Samsung Galaxy S II, i.e. the Galaxy S III, is monopolizing our interest, the company just announced a new and reasonably well-specced mid-range phone. The Samsung Galaxy S Advance is a 4-inch 480 x 800 Super AMOLED screened device. It’s powered by a very capable 1GHz Exynos 4210 dual-core processor, 768MB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage with a 5-megapixel rear and 1.3-megapixel front cameras. It has HSPA 14.4Mbps connectivity and comes running Android 2.3 Gingerbread with Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface slapped on top and a full selection of Samsung apps.

Samsung Galaxy Note: HD 5.3-inch Super AMOLED smartphone with stylus

Samsung’s generally successful attempt to blur the line between a smartphone and a tablet just got a US price and release date. We already knew that the 5.3-inch Samsung Galaxy Nexus was coming to AT&T, but the announcement at CES was scarce of any pricing and availability details.

Motorola RAZR Developer Edition gives you an unloackable bootloader in exchange for any warranty

Motorola RAZR Developer Edition front and back

So what do you do after you’ve released a slightly modified version of a popular smartphone that adds just 1.8mm to its waistline but practically doubles battery life? The answer here is, you re-release the original device as a Developer Edition.

The story is that Motorola has just announced a new variant of its skinny RAZR handset, the Motorola RAZR XT910 Developer Edition. The device is identical to the original GSM Motorola RAZR but has an unlocked bootloader, making it easier to load custom ROMs and generally mod the device. The original RAZR, as most other Motorola devices, is locked down. There is a caveat however, and that is, these developer devices come without any warranty, which is a bit cruel if you ask us; after all, yes you can screw up the software and brick your phone but Motorola should still be liable for hardware faults.

Thanks for listening: HTC to concentrate on a small number of high-end smartphones for 2012

HTC EVO 3D mural video

HTC launched so many devices during 2011 that we’ve lost count. Even trying to cover each and every release from a tech blog’s perspective has become an impossible task, so we can’t imagine how the average person can keep track. As an example, HTC had launched three different variations of the Sensation (Sensation, Sensation XE and Sensation XL) in a space of just a few months.

When we were tackling the company’s Q4 2011 results, we went to HTC’s defense, and we suggested that the company should focus on a limited number of devices, following the lead of the most successful smartphone manufacturer, Apple. We’re glad HTC is now coming on the same page.

LG CX2 'Optimus 3D 2' Android smartphone

Though we admit we are not completely sold on 3D phones, we’re always interested to see what the next generation will bring. Last year was dominated by two 3D phones the HTC EVO 3D and the LG Optimus 3D. Following the leaked LG X3 quad-core monster-phone, the latest leaked handset for LG’s 2012 lineup is a new 3D smartphone codenamed CX2 or as we’ll be calling it, the Optimus 3D 2.

Similar to the original Optimus 3D it will have a stereoscopic glasses-free 4.3-inch display, however instead of only relying on 3D content, this new LG 3D Android smartphone will be able to do a 2D to 3D conversion on the fly. The device is rumored to be running on a new TI OMAP 1.2GHz dual-core processor. It will has dual 5-megapixel rear cameras capable of shooting in 3D and a 1.3-megapixels front camera.

Galaxy Nexus OtterBox Defender series case back in hand

If you’ve read our Galaxy Nexus review (and you should definitely read it here if you haven’t) then you know that using the smartphone without a case is an accident waiting to happen. In fact, my first Galaxy Nexus had suffered a deadly drop. Hence comes the dilemma, enjoy the beautiful and thin lines of your pricey and very fragile new smartphone by carrying it naked, risking its demise at any point, or sacrifice some of the thinness for the peace of mind a case brings.

Well if you are thinking of going with the latter then you might want to read on. OtterBox makes cases, and the company is known for some of the most solidly built cases you will find. We’ll be looking at the most rugged of the pair of OttorBox cases for the Galaxy Nexus, the Defender Series case. In fact this the most rugged case for the Galaxy Nexus that I know of, but correct me if I’m wrong.

For many this case will be overkill, and if size is a big issue then you might want to look elsewhere, because ruggedness comes at a cost. This is the case for the very active or very clumsy. If you are into sports, if your work puts high demands on you or if you want the ultimate protection for your smartphone, read on.

Next generation Sony back-illuminated CMOS image sensors promise better image quality and low-light camera performance for your smartphone

Sony conventional vs. stacked CMOS image sensors

Sony was the first to introduce a consumer-grade (i.e. cheap) back-illuminated CMOS sensor in 2009 and the technology has found its way in a number of devices demanding good low-light camera performance within very tight space requirements, namely in smartphones. iPhone owners can thank this technology for their awesome low-light camera performance.

Sony continues to develop the technology and the company has announced today its new generation of backside-illuminated CMOS sensors, which the company is calling ‘stacked CMOS image sensors’. Sony has created a new manufacturing process that allows it to move supporting circuitry to the back of the sensor, i.e. create a stacked structure. So what does this achieve? Well, Sony is claiming that the new sensor can achieve better image quality and lower power consumption in a smaller package. In addition Sony can build signal processing circuits on the back of the sensor, removing any requirement to have them externally.

Nokia Lumia 800 blue

Nokia is promising to finally end your Lumia 800 battery blues with a second software update. Ever since the Nokia Lumia 800 was released, the device has been plagued with a variety of battery issues. Nokia traced the problem to a software bug and released an update last December but battery life problems remained. If it’s any consolation, the Lumia 800 is not the only device to have faced battery problems, iPhone 4S users had a bone to pick with their devices.

The update has already started rolling out and we are hopping it will finally crush the remaining battery bugs. The update is also promising Wi-Fi connectivity enhancements. It will be a rolling update over the next two weeks, so don’t worry if you don’t get it immediately.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus back close-up

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus (read our full review here) is one of the easiest devices to root. That’s because it’s a Google Nexus device and was made that way. Nevertheless, if you’d rather not get into firing commands towards you shiny new smartphone, there is an app that will do everything for you.

The ‘Wugfresh Galaxy Nexus Root Toolkit’ Windows-only application provides one-click unlock and root for both the GSM/HSPA+ and LTE flavors of the Galaxy Nexus. If you don’t have the Android SDK or the Galaxy Nexus driver installed it will install it for you. LG X3 smartphone render

We pretty much know what a flagship Android handset will be like during 2012. You can rest assured it will have a 720p resolution with a large 4.5-4.7-inch screen, run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and have quad-core (like the Nvidia Tegra 3) or very fast dual-core processor.

A new leaked handset by LG fits this profile perfectly, and is set for a face-off with HTC’s rumored Edge for the title of the first quad-core smartphone. The LG X3 (final retail name be different) is said to be a quad-core Tegra 3 handset with a 4.7-inch 1280×720 display, 8-megapixel rear and 1.3-megapixel front cameras and NFC capabilities.
